Trent Alexander-Arnold could reject Real Madrid if Liverpool win title, Steve McManaman says

Ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid star Steve McManaman said Trent Alexander-Arnold could opt against following in his footsteps if the Reds win the Premier League.

It is an open secret that the Spanish giants want to complete a free-transfer swoop for Alexander-Arnold when the player’s Anfield contract runs out this summer.

Publicly, the 26-year-old has made no decision over his future, and McManaman, who won two Champions League titles during four years in Spain, said he disagreed with the belief that the move to Real Madrid was a done deal.

He also questioned why a player born just a stone’s throw from Liverpool’s Melwood Training Ground was subject to more criticism over a potential move than foreign teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, who also become free agents from July 1.

“There’s been a lot of conjecture, saying [Alexander-Arnold] is talking to Madrid, but there’s nothing new materialising, and we don’t know if he’ll go,” McManaman told the Post. “Hopefully, if Liverpool win the league, he, and the other two players, will stay.

“His contract situation is the same as [Salah and Van Dijk’s], but for some reason, he’s treated differently.”
