Stealing gas is becoming a much more widespread crime.
Most people use gas station pumps on a regular basis. However, the vast majority of drivers don’t try to steal gas. Sadly, one man in Colorado attempted this and then tried to evade a traffic stop from the police. This high-speed chase also led to multiple police officers being injured. Now, the driver is behind bars and facing some pretty serious charges for his actions.
Trying to rob gas station pumps and then evading a traffic stop was not the right decision
According to CBS News, police in Craig, Colorado, received a call on December 26th after a man tried to steal fuel from gas station pumps. Of course, the police headed in that direction but soon spotted a pickup truck matching the one the suspect reportedly had. This led them to attempt a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over. Of course, this caused a high-speed police chase, which is never suitable for public safety.
As they tried to make the traffic stop, police officers observed the driver committing several road violations. This includes speeding by more than 20 miles per hour, forcing other drivers off the road, and driving against the flow of traffic. The man even crashed into a ditch but still refused to stop. At one point, multiple officers used their squad cars to stop the driver. However, he crashed into them, causing damage.
Eventually, police officers on the scene were able to force the traffic stop. They took the driver, Geomar Gomez-Hernandez, to the hospital for medical evaluation and then to jail. He has multiple charges for the lengthy police chase. Sadly, three deputies were injured during the pursuit. However, the hospital released them after a few hours.
