Suspected DUI crash in south Las Vegas valley leaves 1 dead, 20-year-old arrested

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 20-year-old man who was allegedly impaired was arrested following a crash in the south Las Vegas valley that left one person dead and injured several others, according to police.

Around midnight Wednesdat, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) responded to the fatal crash near South Maryland Parkway and Sahara Avenue.

According to police, evidence and witness statements indicated that a 2009 Dodge Journey was traveling southbound on Maryland Parkway at an excessively high speed. Meanwhile, a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox was heading eastbound on Sahara Avenue and attempted to make a right turn at a red light, police said.

The Dodge, reportedly traveling at a “reckless” speed, crashed into the rear of the Chevrolet, LVMPD said. The impact caused the Chevrolet to veer westward, overturning several times. During the rollover, one passenger was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the sidewalk, police said.

The Dodge rotated and stopped in the travel lanes of Maryland Parkway.

Emergency medical personnel arrived and despite their efforts, the ejected passenger from the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene. The other passengers in the Chevrolet were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as Giraldo Salas-Chacon, 20, also sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. LVMPD officials said he showed signs of impairment and was later arrested and, booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges related to the crash.

The crash is currently still under investigation.

The passenger’s death marked the 155th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction for 2024.
