  • Last year’s performance makes 2023’s lackluster production figures seem positive.
  • Stellantis’ Mirafiori plant experienced a 70% drop in production during 2024.
  • Production at Maserati’s factory in Modena, Italy, fell by 79%.

Eighteen months ago, Stellantis agreed with the Italian government to increase its annual production in the country to 1 million units. However, in 2024, the brand’s local production collapsed by a massive 37%, and it built fewer than 500,000 vehicles, meaning it has a long way to go if it wants to live up to its promises.

According to the FIM-CISL union, Stellantis built just 475,090 vehicles in Italy last year. By comparison, it manufactured 751,384 vehicles in the country in 2023. The production of passenger cars shrank by 46% to the lowest level since 1956, while commercial vehicles dropped by 17%.

One of the hardest-hit Stellantis factories is its Mirafiori site in Turin, Italy, which experienced a 70% drop in production last year, Reuters reports. The automaker repeatedly halted production at this plant throughout much of 2024 primarily due to a lack of demand for the all-electric Fiat 500e that’s built there. In the week leading up to Christmas, Stellantis said it would extend a production cut at the factory until February 3.

Maserati’s plant in Modena reported an even more significant 79% drop in production last year. Speaking with the media, FIM-CISL union leader Ferdinando Uliano said “We are very worried about Maserati” and that he expects “a clear and detailed project” for the brand “quickly.”

Shortly after Carlos Tavares left his post as the boss of Stellantis in early December, the group announced a multi-billion-euro investment in Italian production. It will keep all its local plants open and invest €2 billion ($2.1 billion) into the local market this year. Several important new models are in the works, including the next-generation Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV and the Giulia sports sedan. Moreover, at least two new compact models will be built at its Pomigliano D’Arco site in southern Italy starting in 2028.

The struggling Mirafiori plant will also receive a boost and handle the production of a hybrid version of the 500 in late 2025. Stellantis has also committed to continue building the 500 at this site until 2032 or 2033.
