Writers Room Ends In Six Weeks

“Shogun” is moving closer to a new season. Hot off its awards dominance at the 2025 Golden Globes — winning the drama series prize, as well as three acting wins — the writers behind “Shogun” are busy at work on where the series goes next.

“Well, it’s ongoing,” said executive producer/creator Rachel Kondo. “We’re still trying. We haven’t given up. And I’m not sure what we can say.” Added Kondo’s husband and fellow exec producer/creator Justin Marks: “We’re about six weeks from the end of the writers room.”

Marks recently sealed a new TV overall deal with FX Productions, in which he is slated to develop new projects for FX, including those potential new seasons of “Shogun” with Kondo. The potential new seasons of the series are being developed in partnership with Clavell’s estate.

On Sunday, “Shpgun” swept ithe drama categories; besides best drama series, the show won for star Hiroyuki Sanada as best TV drama actor, Anna Sawai for best TV drama actress and seTadanobu Asano for best TV supporting actor.

Back in September, the show set a record with its 18 Emmy Award wins, marking the most wins for a series in a single season. That included wins for best drama series, best actor in a drama series (Hiroyuki Sanada), and best actress in a drama series (Anna Sawai).

“Shogun” was originally considered a limited series, but with its success and critical acclaim, FX began thinking about making it a regular series. In May, star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada signed a deal with FX to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the Japan-set historical epic. Then FX moved the show into the drama categories in the 2024 Emmy race.

Later in May, it was revealed that a writers’ room would begin this past summer to develop two more seasons of the show. FX has not yet given the show a formal renewal.
