Shane Gillis roasts America’s typical car-buying experience

On Matt & Shane’s Secret Podcast, Shane Gillis recently shared his true thoughts on what it’s like to buy a car at basically any dealership in the United States these days…and they’re not positive. The podcast clip earned more than 80,000 likes on Instagram in its first 24 hours. Many of its 850+ comments agree with the comedian and Netflix series “Tires” creator. Oh, and here’s your official foul language heads-up before watching the YouTube Shorts version below.

“Car sales is like the last purchase you can make where it’s just [curse] mayhem.”

“Or it’s just lying…” Gillis vents. After all, he ponders, what’s with a vehicle’s advertised price not matching what you’ll actually have to pay? “I go buy a shirt, it costs this much money. A TV is this much money,” Gillis explains. “Why when I go buy a [curse] car, there’s 10 dudes with goatees trying to [curse] lie to me?”

Comments often concur; one said that’s why Tesla got so huge. Despite it being the most dangerous car brand on the road due to its higher-than-average vehicle fatality rate, many car buyers prefer the company’s purchase process over a traditional dealership. “The buying experience is 10000x better than any other company. Its [like] buying anything on Amazon,” one asserted.

Others corrected the comment, reminding them that it’s the ordering process that Tesla has dealerships beat…and maybe not much else. “When I worked at Tesla, this was the one bit of constant positive feedback – as long as you have everything you need ready to go, the buying process is extraordinarily simple. It’s delivery that gets you – but the ordering process is really simple.”

Anyway, Gillis’s car sales department insults keep rolling out.

“It looks like a bowling team, they’re all in polos and khakis, and they come out and just fib, dude.”

Shane Gillis leans slightly into the rant, backs out a centimeter, and then doubles down, emphasizing how much they avoid transparency when making a sale. “I worked with these guys, I like them…they’ll just go out and lie to peoples’ faces…all day.”

“’I gotta wake up early and then just go lie to a family about a van’,” he jokes.

You might think actual car salesmen feel attacked by the rant…think again

The top comment with thousands of its own likes? “I’m a car salesman who was on the high school bowling team and this is [curse] hilarious.”

It’s not just car salesman catching flak about fibbing in the comments, either. Healthcare services, software sales, and real estate folks were mentioned, too, for their perceived lack of transparency with American consumers.

Another comment earned dozens of likes: “Only in America is it like this. Only country in the world where there are dealers you buy from and not straight from the manufacturer. Everyone is tired of it. Ford threatening to close all its dealerships by not giving them any more inventory cause they won’t stop adding $10k to the sticker price.”

It definitely takes a caring, honest dealership salesperson to make sure the car-buying experience is as smooth and simple as possible upfront. Not to mention free of any financial hazards or surprises later on after signing the purchase agreement. But it sure seems that many drivers just flat-out resent the process…including Shane Gillis.
