Glasgow City also lost ground as they were held to a goalless draw by Hearts at Oriam
Frustrated Jo Potter has insisted that Rangers can kiss their title dreams goodbye if they produce another display like yesterday’s at Meadowbank as they were knocked off the top of the SWPL.
Gers lost 2-0 to Hibs at Meadowbank as Grant Scott’s side opened up a two-point lead at the top of the table. “We were miles off it and we know that it is nowhere near good enough if we want to challenge for titles and challenge for the league,” said Potter.
“We can’t produce performances like that. We have got five games left and we have got to bring our best for every moment of those games.”
Kathleen McGovern opened the scoring after just nine minutes when she headed Eilidh Adams’ cross beyond Jenna Fife. Rangers had an early goal fromKirsty Howat’s goal disallowed before Hibs had taken the lead.
Hibs, though, pressed home their advantage with a second ten minutes before the interval. Stacey Papadopoulos drilled a low shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.
“We had a goal after two minutes and I cannot see why it wasn’t allowed,” said Potter. “Moments like that can swing games.
“I am not saying we would have gone on to win, but I couldn’t see anything wrong with it.
“But we didn’t deserve anything from that game.“If you look at Hibs, they were better than us all over the park. They physically out-battled us which is really disappointing.
“I am not saying they played better football than us but they did what they did well and it was effective.
“On Wednesday we recovered from a breakaway early goal but we never looked like recovering. It is very disappointing but we didn’t deserve a thing.
“The conversation we have with the players now is about the difference in mentality. We lost an early goal away to Glasgow City but we were able to recover, away from home, whereas we didn’t do that. That difference in mentality isshown across the two games.”
Leanne Ross was equally aggrieved as Glasgow City were held to a goalless draw at the Oriam against Hearts. And she has said that tiredness is no excuse for a lethargic start to the game.
It leaves them three points behind Hibs.
