• Mugen will unveil its extreme Civic Type R upgrades at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon.
  • The new aero kit features a massive splitter, rear wing, and an aggressive diffuser.
  • The tuning brand has also prepared a range of upgrades for the lesser Civic RS.

The FL5 Honda Civic Type R is one of the best hot hatches currently on the market, and at January’s Tokyo Auto Salon, it’ll be made even more head-turning thanks to a slew of upgrades from Mugen. The company has already released a slew of upgrades for the Civic Type R but at next month’s event, it’ll be bringing along a pre-production spec version of the Group B concept it unveiled 12 months ago.

Mugen introduced two extreme takes on the Civic Type R last year with its Group A and Group B kits. The first of these quickly spawned a production variant complete with some dramatic aero upgrades that made the lairy hatch look even more outrageous. The Group B kit is even more dramatic and the pre-production prototype looks almost identical to the concept.

Much of Honda’s in-house tuner‘s efforts have been focused on the front end of the Honda. The single biggest new piece fitted is a carbon fiber hood complete with massive air extraction vents and aggressive vanes. The tuner has also worked its magic on the fascia, developing a large carbon fiber splitter.

Some tweaks have been made to the sides of the car. New front quarter panels have been designed, complete with air louvers like those used by some of the planet’s craziest sports cars and supercars. A new piece for this pre-production prototype is redesigned wing mirror caps, seemingly inspired by those from the BMW M division. There are also new silver wheels and small air vents positioned directly behind them.

Rounding out the modifications are new side skirts, a huge fixed rear wing, and a bold diffuser. The car’s three tailpipes have also been ditched in favor of a single one.

Mugen is also bringing a tuning package for the Civic RS to the Tokyo Auto Salon. Like the Type R, it features a revised front splitter, new side skirts, and new wing mirror caps. A race-winning Red Bull Motul Mugen SF23 from the All Japan Super Formula Championship will also be displayed.
