Kevin De Bruyne is not ruling out anything after coming to terms with the fact that his Manchester City career is over – even a sensational summer switch to one of the Premier League champions’ top domestic rivals.

The Belgian midfield maestro, 33, announced earlier this month that he would be leaving The Etihad when his contract expires at the end of the season. He will leave a legend after winning six league titles and the Champions League in the decade since he joined City from Wolfsburg in a £55million deal.

De Bruyne’s influence on City over the last 10 years has been unrivalled, though injuries have hampered him in recent years.

But the playmaker has shown glimpses of his quality during a challenging 2024-25 campaign for Pep Guardiola’s side – and he’s now confirmed that he would consider joining a domestic rival should another Premier League club pick up the phone.

“It came as a bit of a shock. I’m open for anything (including staying in the Premier League),” De Bruyne told reporters following Saturday’s 2-0 win away at Everton.

“I have to look at the whole picture, sporting, the family, everything together, what makes the most sense for my family. I don’t know what it is. It depends on when you speak to people about projects and things.”

While De Bruyne’s comments could pique the interest of some of the clubs the midfielder has toyed with during the years, there has been plenty of talk that the veteran could move overseas and there is understood to be interest from teams in the United States.

De Bruyne himself made no secret of the fact that he was less than impressed with the club hierarchy’s decision to release him.

He hinted that it was City’s chief executive, Ferran Soriano, and the club’s outgoing director of football, Txiki Begiristain, who made the call, explaining that they informed him there would be no new contract offer.

De Bruyne added: “It was a very brief meeting. I don’t really feel like I want to share what was said because it was basically more business wise for them. They just made the decision based on that. It was not really a long conversation. It was just what they told me and I have to accept the situation even though I feel like I can still do a good job, that’s it.”
