Liverpool have turned their attention to signing Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez instead of Martin Zubimendi in January, according to AS.
The Merseyside giants were determined to land Zubimendi from Real Sociedad last summer, but the Spaniard snubbed them in the end.
The decision has proved a blessing in disguise for the Reds. Ryan Gravenberch has been exceptional from the no.6 role under manager Arne Slot.
It is now reported that the Anfield club are looking for a more progressive midfielder this winter and have their sights on landing Gonzalez.
The 22-year-old signed for Porto from Barcelona last year and he has been brilliant this campaign with five goals and five assists in 24 games.
He is primarily a central midfielder, but can also operate from the right wing.
Porto have already done business with Liverpool in the past. Luis Diaz was signed by the Reds during the 2022 winter transfer window.
A January swoop won’t be a surprise, but Porto are expected to demand a premium fee of around €45m to sanction his mid-season exit.
