Since winning March Madness for the fourth time in 2022, Kansas basketball has come up well short of cutting down the nets again. The Jayhawks haven’t seen the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament since, and last season saw them lose in the first round for the first time in 20 years. That was despite KU basketball having three-time All-American Hunter Dickinson on the Kansas basketball roster, who Bill Self grabbed him from the transfer portal a few years ago. Self will again have to rely on the college basketball transfer portal to fortify the Kansas basketball lineup since the Jayhawks had nine seniors on last year’s roster.
Another handful of Jayhawks have hopped into the portal, so Kansas is looking at an extensive overhaul of its roster. Who will Self go after in order for the Jayhawks to contend for championships, or at the very least, see the second weekend of March Madness? Kansas basketball roster news
After landing guards Jayden Dawson and Tre White in early April from the transfer portal, Kansas added another to its backcourt by getting Melvin Council Jr. on April 16. A New York native, Council will be headed to his fourth collegiate program and the first outside of New York. He played for St. Bonaventure last season, where he averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists while leading the A-10 in total steals. Self compared Council to Jayhawks legend, Tyshawn Taylor, who was an All-American at KU, so expectations will be high for the incoming senior.
With these transfer additions, and Dickinson, amongst others, on the way out of Lawrence, Kan., adding frontcourt depth is now a priority for the Jayhawks. A target to potentially help in that regard is Cedric Coward, who played for three schools before hopping into the portal on April 9. Coward played just six games in his lone season at Washington State last year before a shoulder injury sidelined him. However, he was averaging 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in those contests, and as the sixth-ranked uncommitted transfer available, Kansas is battling Duke, Florida and others for his services.
