Jon Stewart On the Deporation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia

On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart took a more serious tone than usual as he slammed President Donald Trump for the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

Stewart opened the segment by explaining the situation surrounding Garcia. According to the late-night pundit, Garcia was an “undocumented migrant from El Salvador” as well as a father and a husband to an American woman. But last month, he was suddenly deported to El Salvador and locked up in a “mega-prison” over an “administrative error,” according to the Justice Department. Stewart then informed the audience that Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele visited the White House on Monday, and joked that Garcia could catch a ride with him back to the States.

“You don’t even have to give Garcia in the middle seat,” Stewart said. “I’m sure Garcia would just grab the wing and Tom Cruise it over here if he had to. But sadly, Bukele arrived at the White House with just the Miami club promoter clothes on his back and a pocket full of excuses.”

Stewart then played a clip from the meeting between Bukele and President Donald Trump. When asked if he had plans to return Garcia to America, Bukele replied, “How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States?”

“Can I honestly tell you? Like, they’re fucking enjoying this, like the two of them,” Stewart said, shifting to a somber tone. “Our president, their president, [they’re like], ‘I can’t do it. I guess we’ll just have to let him rot in fucking prison, even though he didn’t deserve to be there.’”

He continued, “I know you guys don’t care about this guy. I’m talking about [Trump and Bukele], but somebody else cares about this person, and you just randomly, with no evidence that you’ll show anybody, call him a terrorist.”

Stewart then pointed out that Trump seemed completely unbothered by the Garcia situation and was more concerned by the questions of CNN journalist Catlin Colins.

A news clip then played of Colins saying to Trump, “You said that if the Supreme Court said someone needed to be returned, that you would abide by that.” Trump replied, “Why don’t you just say, ‘Isn’t it wonderful that we’re keeping criminals out of our country.’ Why can’t you just say that? Why do you go over and over? That’s why nobody watches you anymore.”

Stewart then shared another news clip, in which a journalist asked Trump if he would be “open” to deporting U.S citizens. Trump’s response: “If it’s a homegrown criminal, I have no problem…I’m talking about really bad people. Really bad people.”

“He’s gonna do that to U.S. citizens,” Stewart said. “I think the hosts of ‘The View’ are about to get administratively error’d. I gotta tell you, I did not think he would get this authoritarian this fast. I really didn’t. I’m sorry.”
