The Max comedy series “Hacks” in its third season has won the Golden Globe for Best TV Series Musical or Comedy at the 2025 awards ceremony.
For “Hacks,” this is the second time the Jean Smart-led series won the top TV comedy prize from the Globes, taking home the award in 2022 after its first season but missing out for Season 2 in 2023.
“Hacks” on Sunday was additionally nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy for Jean Smart and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for Hannah Einbender. Smart previously won in 2022.
Season 3 of “Hacks” faced off against the third season of another hit streaming series, “The Bear,” as well as ABC network comedy “Abbott Elementary,” Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” in its fourth season, and Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This” and “The Gentlemen.”
“Hacks” back in September won the Emmy for Best TV Comedy, the first time it won the top prize from the TV Academy.
“Hacks” already began production for Season 4 and is slated to return in 2025, this time not just on Max but also on the HBO linear channel. Last season ended on something of a cliffhanger twist — one IndieWire labeled one of our favorite scenes of the year — ahead of Smart’s Deborah Vance about to start as the host of a venerated late night show.
“We like to have the audience feel the rug is pulled out from under them. That also forces us to push the characters and their relationship further,” Aniello said in an interview.
“Hacks” is created and showrun by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky. The series is executive produced by Downs and Aniello via their Paulilu banner, Statsky via First Thought Productions, as well as Michael Schur via Fremulon, David Miner for 3 Arts Entertainment, and Morgan Sackett. The studio is Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Co-creator Downs also appears in the series alongside Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Kaitlin Olson, Christopher McDonald, Mark Indelicato, Rose Abdoo, and Lorenza Izzo. Guest stars for Season 3 included J. Smith-Cameron, Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Bucatinsky, George Wallace, Tony Goldwyn, and Aristotle Athari.
Dick Clark Productions, which owns and produces the Golden Globes, is a Penske Media company. PMC is also IndieWire’s parent company.
