Not a classic so far. If it remains the same, it will be intriguing to see which of the benched regulars Mikel Arteta introduces. Presumably, as Bukayo Saka has only made one appearance in his comeback, he will need minutes ahead of Madrid. Martin Odegaard does not, so it will be a test how much Arteta wants to win this one if he keeps his captain out of action.

25 mins: It’s been a bit stop-start so far with a little bit of needle. Tarkowski and Trossard are the latest to exchange words after a coming together. The home fans show their appreciation, or lack of, for referee Darren England with a chorus of booing.
Tarkowski loses the ball trying to square to Gueye and Trossard storms away, but Branthwaite times his run perfectly to make an excellent tackle and clear close to goal.

A bit of an end-of-season feel so far, and not merely because of the sunshine at Goodison. Both sets of fans have chorused the name of the late Kevin Campbell, a favourite son of both clubs. On the pitch, there are the kind of line-ups that may not normally be seen. It is, we think, Nathan Patterson’s first start for Everton at left-back. Elsewhere, there are chances for young players – like Everton’s Tim Iroegbunam – and the odd loanee who should soon depart, such as Arsenal’s Sterling. And Mikel Merino, a midfielder, is actually playing in midfield.
