It’s official: Ari Aster‘s “Eddington” will have its world premiere in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. And to celebrate, A24 has a new first-look image and poster for the upcoming film. It’s not much (and it’s not an official release date), but enough to confirm Aster’s latest will be in theaters soon enough.

Movie fans already knew “Eddington” was likely headed to Cannes thanks to comments made by the film’s DP Darius Khondji last weekend. But now it’s official, thanks to Thierry Frémaux‘s official selection announcement today. The first-look pic shows two of the film’s stars, Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, in what looks like a heated discussion; cool, but not super intriguing. The poster is very satisfying, however: three buffaloes hurtling off a cliff face, with the punny, mordant tagline, “Hindsight is 2020.”
Yup, this pandemic-era Western is bound to be one of the buzzier titles in competition at Cannes, but it remains unclear just exactly what mode of black comedy Aster has in mind for the film. Maybe that will become clearer with the movie’s first trailer since “Eddington” still lacks an official synopsis. Aster fans already know that the film stars Phoenix as a small-town New Mexico sheriff who starts a rivalry withPedro Pascal’s mayor during the 2020 COVID pandemic, which is intriguing, but not a lot to go on. Aster’s latest also stars Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and William Belleau.
As noted earlier, “Eddington” still lacks a theatrical release date, but A24 will likely be announced after it bows at Cannes next month. A24 has also released Aster’s three previous features, including “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” and his most recent, 2023’s “Beau Is Afraid.”
So when should fans get a trailer and a theatrical release date for “Eddington”? A teaser should pop up any day now, but when it hits theaters is more of a mystery. Maybe in July, August, Or September? There’s a three-month gap between “Sorry, Baby” and “The Smashing Machine” on A24’s release calendar, so it makes sense that they’ll slot Aster’s latest (and Spike Lee‘s “Highest 2 Lowest,” another Cannes 2025 premiere, albeit out of competition) sometime this summer.
