Cameron Davis and Will Zalatoris missed out on thousands of pounds in prize money after a mix-up at The Sentry tournament in Hawaii.
The pair were playing partners for the final round and unintentionally hit each other’s ball for their third shots on the par five 15th hole to incur two-shot penalties.
“After realising their mistake upon reaching the green, they returned to play from the proper location of their third shot – but now playing their fifth shot rather than their third, per the Rules of Golf,” the PGA Tour said.
Australian Davis finished on 22 under par and picked up $410,000 (£328,000) in prize money, but would have earned $715,625 (£572,000) without the two-shot punishment.
Zalatoris ended the event on 19 under and won $163,333 (£131,000) rather than the $283,200 (£226,000) if he had finished two shots better off.
If the pair had carried on playing and not rectified the mistake they would have been disqualified from the tournament, which was won by Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama.
