A security guard and deacon at a Gulfport church died in a shooting Saturday when he tried to intervene in a domestic violence dispute that turned physical at a church event, authorities confirmed Saturday.

Gulfport police arrived at the scene at Goldin Sports Complex at 2:05 p.m. and found that two people had been shot and injured, and a third was dead, Gulfport Police Lt. Jason Ducre said.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer identified the deceased as Eddie Shed, 39, of McHenry. He died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, Switzer said.

A second person associated with Empowerment Ministries Christian Center was among the injured. He was taken by helicopter to an Alabama hospital, police said.

The shooting suspect was taken by private vehicle to Singing River Hospital in Gulfport, which used to be the old Garden Park Hospital.

Three people are currently in custody, Ducre said.

The shooting stemmed from a “domestic incident” and was not related to Spring Break.

The shooting happened at the end of a Resurrection Day event put on by Empowerment Ministries Christian Center. The church is down the street from the park.

The event took place from 11 a.m. until to 2 p.m. and included food, fellowship and Easter egg hunts, a pastor said..

This is a developing story and will be updated.
