Chainsawman Denji movie

Chainsaw Man’s Back, and He’s Going To the Movies

While Chainsaw Man’s manga has been putting fans through the wringer the past few years, we’ve not heard much about its pretty good anime adaptation in quite a while. Studio MAPPA’s been quite busy, but last year, it revealed it’d go back to Denji and Pochita not with a new season, but a movie—which got its first look at this weekend’s Jump Festa.

Based on the manga’s “Reze” arc, the film finds Denji excited to finally go on a date with his boss Makima. It’s not long after that he finds himself crossing paths with a sweet girl named Reze who seems to like hanging out with him, and the young (chainsaw) man can’t help but be smitten with her. Unfortunately, it turns out Reze’s intentions aren’t quite as pure as they seemed, and she’s a Devil, just like him. As such, Denji’s gotta fight his new crush and save Japan from the chaos she wants to cook up. And part of that will involve riding a shark in midair because…well, it’s Chainsaw Man, sometimes that’s just part of the job.

When MAPPA’s work looks good, it looks good, and this movie seems to be no exception. Between Chainsaw Man’s first season and Reze, the studio’s continually pushed itself—often literally, and in worrying ways—and you can see the results of that effort here. The Reze movie’s expected to drop in 2025, in what’s going to be a pretty big year for MAPPA: in addition to this, its other film Rose of Versailles is dropping, and it’ll be releasing Lazarus for Adult Swimthe original series Zenshu, and another season of Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill.

As for when Chainsaw Man’s getting a proper season two, MAPPA didn’t say. But if new seasons for Jujutsu Kaisen, Ranma 1/2, and Hell’s Paradise are coming, that hopefully can’t be far behind.
