Bella Ramsey 'Didn't Want' Being Non-Binary to 'Become a Headline'

Bella Ramsey had some hesitation about coming out as non-binary, but ultimately feels like it was the right decision.

In a recent sit-down with The Guardian, Ramsey discussed the choice to go public with their gender identity. While “The Last of Us” star admits that they sometimes “look back and I wish that I didn’t” come out, they can now “live more freely” having shared the news.

“Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t, because I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing,” Ramsey said. “And obviously it was going to, and I didn’t really understand that at the time. And I wasn’t really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation.”

They continued, “So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret. But now I’m like, ‘I’ll talk about it, but I don’t want it to be the focus anymore.’ I guess I’m just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically.”

Ramsey is currently starring in Season 2 of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” which premiered on April 13. Based on the hit PlayStation title of the same name, the show also stars Pedro Pascal, Gabriel Luna, Rutina Wesley, Isabela Merced, Kaitlyn Dever and Young Mazino.
