With Marvel‘s “Spider-Man 4” preparing to start shooting later this year, rumors abound about who will join Tom Holland in the sequel’s main cast. Will Zendaya come back? That’s unconfirmed. And what about Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire returning as their respective Peter Parkers like they did in 2021’s “No Way Home“? That’s been a source of speculation since before Destin Daniel Cretton‘s film was officially announced last October.

And it will continue to be a question Mr. Garfield fields in interviews, as he recently did in a new one for GQ UK. When asked if he’s been cast in “Spider-Man 4,” the actor gave one of his typically cagey responses. “Yeah, no,” he said about returning to the franchise. “But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.” “Spider-Man” fans will remember that Garfield denied he as in “No Way Home” in interviews several times in 2021 before it was revealed that, yes, he was in fact in the movie. So it’s fair for Garfield to be evasive about the subject (and for fans to not believe anything he says).
Still, his comments are more definitive response about his potential “Spider-Man 4” involvement than the ones Garfield gave on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast last October. “Your assumption is not unfounded,” he replied to host Josh Horowitz when asked if he’s had talks about returning for the sequel sequel. When Horowitz pressed further, the actor continued, “This feels a little tantamount to illegal, kind of insider trading in some kind of way. No matter what I say, I could be held liable for that, and I’m going to decline to comment.”
So, no, don’t expect Garfield to give clear answers about his involvement with the “Spider-Man” franchise anytime soon. But would he get involved in a similar series of blockbuster films again? “If it felt in line with my soul and was gonna be fun,” the actor told GQ UK. “Maybe I’m gonna have like five kids at some point, and I’m gonna need to start saving up for the school tuition or something.”

For Garfield, it’s more about working consistently and not on particular projects or specific directors. In that case, Garfield shot down another rumor from last year: that Martin Scorsese was eyeing him to star in his upcoming film about Jesus. “There was a rumor,” Garfield said, “it’s not true to my knowledge.” “You can’t just keep waiting for Scorsese to call, ’cause he makes a movie every three years, and a lot of the time Leo DiCaprio is in it.”
That’s solid rumor control from Garfield, but let’s be honest: after he wraps production on “The Magic Faraway Tree,” his calendar in wide open. And with “Spider-Man 4” planning to start shooting in June, it’s not unfathomable for him to be secretly involved. In other words, don’t expect the mystery of Garfield’s involvement in “Spider-Man 4” to be solved until it hits theaters on July 24, 2026; then Marvel fans will know what the truth really is.
