Manchester United’s back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was blasted by Roy Keane for a ‘basic’ mistake to gift Newcastle their fourth goal on Sunday.
Ruben Amorim dropped Andre Onana after his error-strewn display against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night, handing Bayindir his first Premier League start.
But the decision backfired as Bayindir conceded four goals from six shots on target and gave away a cheap final goal in the 4-1 thrashing.
In fairness to the Turkish stopper, this was just his eighth appearance in almost two seasons at Manchester United.
But his decision to try and chip a ball through midfield, which Joelinton intercepted to set up Bruno Guimaraes, left Keane and Les Ferdinand questioning his ‘common sense’.
‘Of course (he was at fault). You go back to the decision-making. I’m not even sure what the big benefit (would be, making that pass). It’s too risky,’ Keane said on Sky Sports.

‘It’s absolutely too risky. There’s players around you. At the highest level, it’s about your decision making.
‘I’m quick to defend goalkeepers when they first come into the team because I think it does take five, six, seven games to get up to speed with the shot. But that basic mistake there, I can’t understand it.
‘This is big boy stuff. You’re up at Newcastle, Newcastle are flying, you do your own homework on who they’re playing and when they’re pressing you.
‘If you’re going to go long, make sure you go too far, so then at least it’s up the pitch.
‘But if you lose it there, someone is through on goal on top of you. That’s just common sense.’
Ferdinand added: ‘It’s typical of what we’re watching with goalkeepers noawadays being too precise, too clever.
‘Just put your foot through that, say, “we’re 3-1 down, let’s not go 4-1 down by making a silly mistake.” He doesn’t, he tries to clip a little dinky ball into the centre-forward.’

All of Bayindir’s appearances for United had been in domestic cups or Europe before Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils signed him in 2023 for £4.3million from Fenerbahce, where he was the first-choice goalkeeper for four seasons.
However, he was only given one game in his first season and has racked up just seven more outings this season, with this being his first since January.
Amorim dropped Onana after making errors for both of Lyon’s goals in midweek, leaving him at home instead of taking him to St James’ Park.
It has been a time of turmoil off the field for the Cameroonian.
In March, Onana’s wife was the victim of a violent street robbery that left the family needing 24-hour protection. Melanie Kamayou was targeted by a thief who stole her £62,000 Hermes bag and Rolex watch as she got out of her car to meet a friend for dinner in Alderley Edge.
Onana has continued to play for United despite the ordeal, but was heavily criticised for his performance in Lyon following a public spat with ex-United player Nemanja Matic.
The Lyon midfielder branded him one of the worst keepers in United’s history after Onana said Amorim’s side were ‘way better’ than their French opponents. The United ‘keeper hit back by saying that, unlike Matic, he has won trophies at United, but his performance at the Groupama Stadium on Thursday saw him widely criticised.
