Alicia Silverstone to Return for 'Clueless' Sequel Series at Peacock

Get a clue! Peacock is developing a sequel series based on the ’90s favorite “Clueless,” and Alicia Silverstone is attached to star in the series reprising her role as Cher Horowitz, IndieWire has learned.

The Peacock show is described only as a follow-up sequel show to the 1995 cult favorite film from director and writer Amy Heckerling (who will EP the series), and while there have been some rumors about the exact focus of the show floating around, creative details are being kept under wraps for now. The series is currently in development for the streamer.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of “Gossip Girl” and “Nancy Drew” fame will write the series alongside “Freakier Friday” scribe Jordan Weiss, and all three will executive produce the series. Schwartz and Savage are producing through their banner Fake Empire.

Silverstone is also executive producing the series, as is Heckerling and the film’s original producer Robert Lawrence. CBS Studios is producing the show alongside Universal Television.

Peacock originally tried to reboot the franchise as a mystery show centered on Stacey Dash’s Dionne character back in 2020 that never came together. Silverstone did however reprise her role for a Super Bowl ad back in 2023.

“Clueless” this year celebrates its 30th anniversary and will play as part of a Fathom Entertainment summer screening in theaters. The original made $56.6 million worldwide via Paramount Pictures and has become a cult hit and one of the quintessential ’90s movies. In addition to Silverstone and Dash, “Clueless” starred Paul Rudd, late actress Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, Dan Hedaya, and Wallace Shawn. The film is loosely based on the Jane Austen novel “Emma” and follows a wealthy Beverly Hills teen who fashions herself a matchmaker.

“Clueless” was a breakout role for Silverstone that netted her a part in “Batman & Robin.” She’ll have an indie turn when she appears in Yorgos Lanthimos’ next movie “Bugonia” opposite Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone, as well as the Justin Kelly thriller “Pretty Thing.” She most recently starred in “Y2K” from A24 and director Kyle Mooney.
