She thought letting the police know she was stealing a car that “wasn’t legally hers” and getting arrested would somehow make her theft legal.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa, Florida received a strange theft call from 37-year-old Christy Turman earlier this year. She was planning to steal a Corolla from the dealer’s lot and wanted to make sure authorities were aware of her intentions.
After all, Turman wanted to make sure she could execute the theft “legally.”
“I’m about to steal a car that isn’t legally mine, so y’all better come out and make a report,” she said during her 911 call, shared by the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page. “I’m reporting me.”
By the time deputies arrived, Turman was standing outside of the Corolla she managed to start. She stood with her hands behind her back while waiting for handcuffs.
The theft was part of her training, she said
While Turman was in an officer’s squad car, she said she was training for a game of “Black Ops.” She didn’t go into too much detail, so authorities have no idea if she’s referring to a video game, a social media trend, or something gang-related.
Authorities charged Turman with trespassing after police brought her to the station. Both the dealership and the police didn’t press theft charges since the vehicle never left the lot.
This wasn’t the first time the Sheriff’s Office dealt with her, either. Her criminal history was rich with counts of petty theft, aggravated battery, and robbery.
We may never know if she was under the influence
The Sheriff’s Office didn’t disclose whether or not she was under the influence of any sort of drugs, but it may be safe to assume she was.
