The Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango aren’t selling well. Stellantis has to pause production.
Things are continuing to get worse for Stellantis. Sales for the Jeep Grand Cherokee aren’t doing so hot and it’s typically the best-selling Jeep SUV. The Dodge Durango hasn’t been a real winner lately, but it’s also getting worse. As a result, production is pausing for both SUVs.
Stellantis pauses Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango production
Amid lawsuits, threats to strike, and declining sales, things are getting even worse for Stellantis. Stellantis SUVs aren’t selling very well as inventory piles up at dealerships.
As a result, Stellantis is pausing production of the popular Jeep Grand Cherokee and the muscular Dodge Durango.
The Detroit Assembly Complex Jefferson will be shut down for the last week of October with subsequent layoffs.
According to Motor 1, a communication titled “Important Notice of Layoff” shared that Stellantis continues to take necessary actions to align production with sales.
This includes making adjustments at the Detroit Assembly Complex. Stellantis will continue monitoring the situation to address when further action is required.
The complex employed over 5,000 people in 2022 and permanent layoffs hit 200 in September. It’s unclear how many people are being let go.
From January to October, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has sold 160,939 models. This is a 12% sales decline compared to the same time period in 2023. The Dodge Durango has sold 46,870 units since January and experienced a 13% year-over-year sales decrease.
A majority of Stellantis vehicles are facing an overstock at dealerships in North America. Some of the brands that are worse off than others, like Alfa Romeo, have over a year’s worth of supply.
Some critics blame the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike, supply chain shortages, quality issues, and inflation for declining sales.
However, others feel as if prices are just too high. The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts at $38,035 and the 2024 Dodge Durango has an MSRP of $39,670.
