An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 has been felt in Istanbul, according to Turkey’s emergency management agency, but there are no reports yet of any damage or injuries.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 and a shallow depth of 10km, with an epicentre some 40km southwest of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.
It was felt in several neighbouring regions, reports said.
Turkey is crossed by two major fault lines, and earthquakes are frequent.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake on 6 February 2023, which was followed hours later by a powerful tremor, destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 southern and southeastern Turkish provinces, leaving more than 53,000 people dead.
Another 6,000 people were killed in northern parts of neighbouring Syria.
