'I Know What You Did Last Summer' 2025 Trailer: A Teen Slasher Revived

Almost 30 years later and finally, we might actually know what happened that one summer…

The franchise reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” blends a modern-day crime (and vengeful serial killer) with events from the original 1997 movie, including stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their roles.

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” centers on five friends, played by “Outer Banks” breakout Madelyn Cline, “The Little Mermaid” actor Jonah Hauer-King, “Him” star Tyriq Withers, “The Studio” star Chase Sui Wonders, and “The Wilds” breakout Sarah Pidgeon. The group is haunted by the victim of a drunk driving accident, so they turn to Hewitt and Prinze’s characters from the first film for help as they, too, try to survive the murderous fisherman who’s stalked all the franchise’s films.

The official synopsis reads: “When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”

Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette, Austin Nichols, and Lola Tung co-star. “Do Revenge” filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directs the film with a script by Leah McKendrick, Sam Lansky, and Robinson. Previous franchise star Sarah Michelle Gellar (not in this film, as her character previously died) and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” director Robinson collaborated on “Do Revenge.”

Robinson teased with People that “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel star Brandy Norwood could appear in the 2025 film; Robinson also told Collider that this installment will be “a lot more brutal” than its predecessors.

The original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was based loosely on Lois Duncan’s 1973 book. Hewitt, Prinze, Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe starred as the core group of friends involved in a hit-and-run accident who dispose of their victim’s body, only to be hunted a year later by a hook-wielding fisherman killer claiming to know their secret. Jim Gillespie directed the film from a script by “Scream” scribe Kevin Williamson.

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” opens July 18 in theaters from Sony Pictures. Check out the trailer below.
