Director Michael Bay is back and about to blow s*** up! The director, known for putting a high-speed highway chase in nearly all his movies, is back with a car-themed action flick. A report from Deadline has revealed Bay is making a feature film version of the classic Sega driving game “OutRun” at Universal Pictures with Jayson Rothwell writing, and the kicker is that in-demand actress Sydney Sweeney is attached to produce (hopefully may take on an acting role as well as the project gestates and her schedule allows) with Bay and Platinum Dunes partner Brad Fuller.
While the 1986 arcade game “OutRun,” where you drive a Ferrari Testarossa convertible, likely won’t be automatically a recognizable name for those of a certain age, youngsters, it is up there with similar old-school racing titles like “Cruis’n U.S.A.,” “Need For Speed,” and “Daytona USA.”

Bay’s last theatrical outing, “Ambulance,” was quite the cat-and-mouse heist film and proved to be quite entertaining for those who simply want an entertaining popcorn experience with some of the best technical use of photography and stunts in the business.
This pairing isn’t terribly shocking given Sweeney’s recent attempt to put together a string of franchise roles alongside more dramatic work. Most recently, she was in the mix for Legendary‘s upcoming “Gundam” movie, had a supporting role in “Madame Web,” and is attached to star as the sexy French intergalactic spy heroine in a “Barbarella” remake with Edgar Wright (“The Running Man”) directing.
Universal is also behind “The Fast & The Furious” franchise and likely wants more car-focused action flicks in development as the main group of films is expected to be winding down after the next installment.
Sweeney, for those who are unaware, is actually quite the gearhead, having posted multiple videos on social media of her fixing up various Ford trucks, leading to a partnership with the automaker. So, her getting involved in an action flick centred around cars isn’t the strangest idea in the world.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Sweeney ends up getting in front of the camera and behind the wheel on “OutRun.”
