Celtic hero Stiliyan Petrov has spoken out on his son’s controversial venture into politics – saying he’s a young man who is free to choose his own path, even if he disagrees in ‘certain cases.’

But Petrov Sr. won’t be embarking on a political career of his own any time soon as he says he’s ‘miles away’ from that world.

Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform Party announced last week that a candidate named Stiliyan Petrov would be standing for them in the next election in the Lapworth and West Kenilworth constituency.

That turned heads, particularly among Celtic circles, but it quickly emerged it was Petrov’s 22-year-old son, named after his dad, and not the former Hoops and Aston Villa star himself.

It drew criticism from fans but Petrov Sr has distanced himself from it – while defending his kid’s right to speak for himself.

He said: “First of all I’ve never been into politics and I never will be. My son is passionate about the world and I’ve strongly encouraged that.

“Even though we haven’t agreed in certain cases, he’s his own man. He’s an independent, young man who works hard, he’s happy to help the community and he draws his own path in life.

“With young kids now, they have their own choices. But I’m miles away from politics. I don’t have an interest whatsoever, that’s all I can say.”
