Netflix has announced The Thursday Murder Club release date for its newest murder mystery comedy led by Golden Globe nominee Pierce Brosnan as ex–union activist Ron and Oscar winner Helen Mirren as ex-spy Elizabeth. The movie is based on Richard Osman’s 2020 international bestselling novel of the same name.
“The series follows four irrepressible retirees — Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim and Joyce — who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands,” reads the official synopsis.
When is The Thursday Murder Club release date?
The Thursday Murder Club will officially be available for streaming on Thursday, August 28, exclusively on Netflix. In addition to Mirren and Brosnan, the ensemble cast also includes Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant, and Ingrid Oliver.
The movie is directed by Home Alone and Harry Potter filmmaker Chris Columbus from a screenplay written by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote. It is executive produced by Jo Burn, Osman, Eleanor Columbus, Holly Bario, and Jeb Brod, with Columbus and Jennifer Todd producing. The film is a production between Amblin and Netflix.
“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom,” Osman said on the inspiration behind his hit novel (via Tudum). “You think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’ The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve [a crime] is exactly where The Thursday Murder Club comes from. Take these people who are underestimated but who have these incredible skills, put them together, and they can achieve anything.”
