Katy Perry, who kickstarted her Lifetimes tour in Mexico City, has recently and unexpectedly canceled her shows at Arena Guadalajara. These shows were scheduled for May 1 and 2, respectively. This cancellation happens amidst criticism and backlash directed at the singer for her participation in the Blue Origin spaceflight mission. Besides Perry, the Blue Origin spaceflight mission also featured Gayle King, Kerianne Flynn, Amanda Nguyen, Aisha Bowe, and Lauren Sanchez.
So, why did Katy Perry cancel her Guadalajara show? Here is the reason explored.
Katy Perry cancels show last minute amid backlash
On Monday, Katy Perry explained via Instagram Stories that the reason her scheduled shows at Arena Guadalajara were canceled was because of issues with the venue.
“Sadly, I learned that the construction of Arena Guadalajara will not be complete for their scheduled shows next week, which includes mine on May 1 and 2,” Perry wrote on Instagram. (via Billboard)
Perry then mentioned that she had sent her team to scout out the venue, so they could see if they could find a way to ensure her shows could still take place. However, when her team arrived, they learned that the venue wasn’t safe for her show or the audience.
The Roar songstress then expressed regret that the shows couldn’t happen and wished that she “could fix this.” However, she noted that the situation was out of her control. Despite this, Perry expressed her gratitude to her Guadalajara fans, promising something special for them in the future.
Katy Perry isn’t the only artist forced to cancel her shows in Guadalajara. According to promoter Zignia Live, other artists who had scheduled shows at the venue, Carlos Rivera and Intocable, also had to scrap their planned performances. Prior to the cancellations, Rivera’s performance had been scheduled for April 25. Meanwhile, Intocable was poised to take the stage on April 26.
As mentioned on her official website, Perry is next scheduled to perform at Mexico City’s Arena CDMX, where she kickstarted the tour on April 23, and is also set to perform on April 25 and 26.
