Tina Fey Addresses Lorne Michaels' SNL Comment: 'He's Irreplaceable'

There has been speculation about Tina Fey replacing Lorne Michaels on SNL after Michaels praised her and suggested she could “easily” take over after him. Now, Tina Fey has finally opened up about the remark, and her response reflects deep admiration, humility, and a clear sense of reverence for the comedy legend.

Here’s what Tina Fey said about Lorne Michaels’ flattering comment and her thoughts on taking over SNL.

Addressing the growing rumors, Tina Fey responded to Michaels’ public endorsement of her.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Fey acknowledged the kind words, saying, “It was nice of him to say that, and I love him very much. He’s irreplaceable.” She added that Michaels possesses a rare combination of instincts and leadership qualities. “His set of gifts and skills are entirely unique. His eye for talent! He’s one of the last three people in show business who actually understand everything. I’ll leave it at that.”

Despite the glowing praise, Fey did not confirm or deny any interest in taking over SNL herself. Her answer seemed to reflect more her respect for Lorne Michaels’ enduring legacy and a reluctance to entertain such speculation.

Lorne Michaels, who launched SNL in 1975, told Entertainment Tonight in 2024 during his Emmy red-carpet moment that Tina Fey “could easily” be his successor. He described her as “brilliant” and emphasized that while she would be a strong candidate, other current SNL talent could also be considered.

After his initial comments, rumors about Michaels’ retirement and a potential successor began circulating. However, he soon cleared his stance on retirement talk, stating that he has no plans to leave the show anytime soon.

Tina Fey is set to return to screens soon. She stars in the upcoming Netflix series The Four Seasons, based on the 1981 Alan Alda film.
