Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria star Eric Dane has announced that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
What did Eric Dane say about his ALS diagnosis
“I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” Eric Dane said about his ALS in a statement. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.
ALS, which is also known commonly as Lou Gehrig’s disease, causes muscles to become paralyzed over time. The degenerative disease has no cure and gets worse over time. Early symptoms include issues with using limbs and slurred speech, which progress to being unable to walk and breathe on their own without a device. This is due to the disease impacting nerve cells in both the brain and spine.
“From the time of diagnosis, most patients die within three to five years. Around 30% of ALS patients are alive beyond five years after diagnosis, and 10-20% of patients survive 10 years or more. Survival beyond 20 years is possible but rare. Factors associated with more favorable survival rates include a younger age, male gender, and limb rather than bulbar symptom onset,” explains the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s website.
ComingSoon sends best wishes to Dane and his family at this time.
