The Lion King Star Wants a Timon & Pumbaa Spin-off

Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen lend their voices to Timon and Pumbaa in the 2019 remake of The Lion King and 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King. Just like the original versions of these characters in the 1994 animated movie, in which Nathan Lane voices Timon and Ernie Sabella voices Pumbaa, these newer iterations have drawn fan adoration, and there is a demand for a spin-off based around them. In a new interview, Eichner backed the call for a movie on his and Rogen’s characters.

Mufasa: The Lion King’s Billy Eichner on what’s needed for a Timon and Pumbaa movie

Billy Eichner stated in a recent interview that both he and Rogen were “ready to go” for a Timon and Pumbaa spin-off. The actor also speculated what the story of such a project could be.

”Everyone’s asking about it. Seth and I, we’re ready to go. We need people to make noise about a Timon and Pumbaa movie,” Eichner told Dexerto, before humorously adding, “I think it’s very, very important that we all talk about that constantly.”

The Difficult People actor suggested that a prequel set in the future would be “fun.” He continued, “I think some sort of a road trip movie would be fun, where they go on an adventure, meet new characters, and then maybe touch base with the classic characters. A real fun, colorful comedy.”

Eichner further noted how “intense” and “emotional” The Lion King is and remarked that the prospective Timon and Pumbaa spin-off would have to explore their friendship and could be “really funny and fast.”

The Bros star also declared that he wanted composer Lin-Manuel Miranda to return for the spin-off. He jokingly claimed that he and Rogen were “very angry about” the fact that Miranda didn’t write them any songs for Mufasa: The Lion King.

Notably, Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella went on to portray their respective characters from the original movie in several spin-offs and the Timon & Pumbaa TV series. Accordingly, there is a considerable chance that if Disney wishes to continue the franchise, it can opt for a Timon and Pumbaa spin-off with Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen.
